Shot placement wins every time. A .22 in the right spot beats a .44 magnum in the shoulder. I've seen deer run 100 yards after bad hits from magnums and drop instantly from well-placed .243 shots, master your fundamentals before you chase bigger bullets.
 
A precise shot with a small round beats a heavy hitter placed poorly any day
 
Pea Shooters weren't just for squirrels. The 32 cal flintlocks using 31 cal patched roundballs (44 gr) were used to get deer. You get the same power from a .22 rifle.
