I'm new to fishing and really want to share that experience with my 5-year-old. I've seen those kid-friendly fishing rods in stores and thought it might be a good starting point. What's the simplest setup I could use to make things enjoyable for us? I just want to keep it easy and fun, not worrying about catching a ton of fish. Any recommendations on bait or approach for a complete beginner like me?

I'm a fishing instructor for NHF&G. Start him off with a closed-face spinning reel and short (maybe 3-4') rod and don't spend a lot. You can get outfits like that, ready to fish, for very short money at Wally World and elsewhere. A package of smallish hooks, a bobber or two, and some worms, and you're ready to go. Be sure to de-barb the hooks - - 5-yr-old casters are pretty unpredictable.
