What shotgun works best for home defense?

I’ve been thinking about getting a shotgun for home defense and could use some advice from those who’ve been there. I’m stuck between getting a 12-gauge or a 20-gauge. The 12ga definitely has more stopping power, but I’ve heard the 20ga has less recoil and might be better for handling indoors. What do you all think?

When it comes to barrel length and stock setup, what should I focus on for home defense? I want something simple and reliable. Also, if you have any favorite models or brands that have served you well, I’d love to hear about them.

Lastly, how important is training? I’ve shot a bit before, but nothing intense. What kind of practice do you recommend to really feel prepared?

There is nothing simpler than a double barrel shotgun. I have a Stoeger 12ga coach gun beside the bed.

As soon as the short barrel designation/restriction is stricken from the law books (I think it will be soon), I'll chop the barrels down to 14 inches.

For home defense, a 20-gauge is plenty and way easier for you to handle indoors than a 12

Don't listen to the double-barrel guys, you need capacity. Get a 20-inch barrel and focus on finding low-recoil tactical buckshot. Your shoulder will thank you, and your wallet will hate the subsequent ammo purchases

Don't listen to that eF_King dude ... Double barrel 12 gauges have handled the job for hundreds of years. They haven't become less effective - not at all. Load it with #4 buck.
