Best 9mm Carry Ammo Recommendations

I've been carrying a 9mm for a while now and I'm curious what everyone thinks about the best self-defense ammo. Any recommendations for hollow points that have proven reliable in your experience?

I load Speer Gold Dot ammo in all of the half-dozen or so handguns I use for self-defense. My only basis for choosing that ammo - years ago - was my understanding that it's used by many police departments, which addresses questions of reliability and effectiveness. I've been told I should fire a couple hundred rounds in each firearm to ensure reliability, and I think that's good advice, but at over $1 per round I confess I haven't done that. I have no doubt that similar SD loads by various other major manufacturers are equally effective and reliable.
